Every day free tournaments are being held both online and in live casinos.

These freerolls are responsible for attracting millions of players to the game.  Since the entrants are not risking any of their own money, there is less stress involved and the game can be enjoyed more.  Many people view poker as simply being a gambling game, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Poker as a game of skill involves mathematical decisions, odds calculations, and the maximizing of winnings while minimizing losses.

Be Patient

The one basic rule that successful players must all use is this:

be patient.  The most long-term successful players utilize a tight, aggressive strategy that requires waiting until the timing is perfect.  Unlike texas holdem games that are solely based on luck such as slots or keno, poker is played against other players.  Being a winning poker player means profiting from opponents' mistakes.  Many times a player will become emotionfally involved during the course of a hand.  Making decisions based on emotions or impulse will quickly spell the end to being a profitable poker player.

This does not mean that a player must sit and wait for an excellent hand, but that the player should wait until the situation is right.  Sometimes, a well-timed bluff can produce more profits than an excellent hand.  A skillful player may wait several rounds before playing a hand. When the player decides to enter a pot, the opponents will believe he has an excellent hand.  The skillful player may have just waited until he sensed weakness in his opponents and then decided to try a bluff regardless of the cards held.

Free tournaments are an excellent place to try expanding one's ability to bluff.  In the

situation in which a player senses weakness among the opposition, he should raise the pot to a level where anyone holding a marginal hand would reconsider continuing the hand.  This is a tricky maneuver, but if executed well by appearing strong could easily win the pot.
